Mary Burmeister (Book III) BEING A JIN SHIN JYUTSU CLASS ORGANIZER Dear Jin Shin Jyutsu Class Organizer, Propagating the Art of Jin Shin Jyutsu depends on dedicated organizers such as yourself working with students, instructors, the Scottsdale office and other organizers to present classes that are well attended, well received and worthy of the Art. It requires that organizers be focused on what is best for their Jin Shin Jyutsu communities while recognizing regional concerns and even the good of the Art world-wide. While organizing Jin Shin Jyutsu classes has some seemingly competitive elements, it can only be successful when governed by what can be called a deep cooperation, a cooperation that is from the Art itself: be the harmonizer. The following is a first attempt to set down a charter of deep cooperation, one that says "this is how we do things" when we are being the harmonizer. While the application here is to your work as an organizer, the underlying standards apply to all of us in the Jin Shin Jyutsu organization.STUDENTS: While an organizer has complementary responsibilities to teachers, the Scottsdale Office and other organizers, it all begins with Jin Shin Jyutsu students and particularly with cultivating a local Jin Shin Jyutsu community. Classes work best when they are the next logical step in the organic development of the community. Such development may include conducting self-help classes, community presentations, or supporting study groups and other activities that offer exposure to and experience of Jin Shin Jyutsu. A tone of inclusion, transparency and good will characterizes all the activities associated with our Jin Shin Jyutsu communities. All who are interested are welcomed; none is offered favoritism or a place of privilege. INSTRUCTORS: Jin Shin Jyutsu has a diverse and seasoned faculty offering students a multi-faceted awareness of the Art rooted in the integrity of the teaching and in a shared devotion to Mary. We request that Organizers invite different instructors to their classes to assure a wide diversity in the expression of Jin Shin Jyutsu. Organizers may not establish a faculty sub-group rotation, or contract with a single faculty member to return year after year. The regional Time slots need to be maintained, regardless of whether an Instructor can fill the slot. In these cases, we request Organizers, always look for an Instructor who can work within your time slot. While we honor the faculty, the primary consideration is what is best for the students and the cultivation of the Art in our communities. Organizers schedule classes for instructors with great care, appreciating that instructors teach as an expression of their devotion to the Art and as a livelihood. As a courtesy please do not extend multiple invitations to teach the same class. The necessary paperwork is submitted to Scottsdale via the online Organizer Create class system (classes in the USA), or the downloadable Class planning forms (rest of the world), with a copy to the instructor as soon as an agreement is reached. The Organizer does not alter what has been agreed to unless the alteration is mutual. Classes themselves are organized according to the wishes and expectations of the instructor. This includes how the classroom is arranged, the equipment available, food and beverage arrangements and the other details that can be tailored to suit the instructor‘s needs. It also includes getting the instructor's approval for expenditures. The classes are understood to be times devoted solely and exclusively to Jin Shin Jyutsu. Other modalities are not advertised, their materials are not displayed or sold and they are not demonstrated or practiced during class. This is not because we believe Jin Shin Jyutsu is the only way, but because, like every Art, it deserves to be appreciated for its own sake and in its own context without competing or comparing. Moreover, this is also an Insurance liability issue when students do practices other than JSJ during class time OTHER ORGANIZERS: Deep cooperation may be most important in how organizers deal with each other. The wish to organize successful classes that are well attended can easily slide into a territoriality that interferes with what is best for Jin Shin Jyutsu students and communities. It is imperative that organizers communicate with other organizers in their region to ensure that classes in the region are scheduled thoughtfully, while seeing the big picture and allowing the whole to be more than the sum of the parts. This includes insuring that the region offers variety in the times that classes are offered, the instructors who give the classes and the types of classes given. Conflict will arise. When it does each organizer is responsible to take the initiative to settle it directly and confidentially, with those involved. For example, with Organizer wide issues, this still means only communicating with the relevant party, not all other Organizers. If it is felt that the input of other parties is required, this can be discussed with and organized by, the Scottsdale Office. If an impasse is reached, those involved agree to utilize a third party: another organizer, a faculty member or someone from the Scottsdale Office. Members of all these groups stand ready to assist with conflict resolution when all parties are operating with the full force of their integrity. Above all, conflict should not involve students in any way, to preclude encouraging students to take sides. Neither should it devolve into gossip which is often damaging to someone involved and sometimes damaging to everyone involved. . SCOTTSDALE: The goal of deep cooperation with the Scottsdale Office is to listen as closely as possible to what they need to make their job simpler and more efficient, and vice-versa. We realize the Organizer’s Guide isn‘t always present in everyone‘s mind, but it really simplifies everyone‘s life if Scottsdale doesn‘t need to redo, repeat, re-request. Getting things done on time, accurately and in the designated format saves a tremendous amount of time and energy, precious resources everyone at the office would so much rather invest in listening to your needs than in re-stating theirs!
