Dear Students and Friends,
Thanks to your love and enthusiasm, the Blessings of the Art of Jin Shin Jyutsu Physio-Philosophy continue to ripple out into ever-widening circles, reaching growing numbers of people around the world. It is inspiring to see so many of you continue to grow in your awareness and to hear your beautiful stories about the special ways Jin Shin Jyutsu has touched the lives of your friends and families.
In order to grow together as a strong community, we feel it will be helpful to clarify certain practical matters. The following is an outline of study, practice and organizational participation that we hope is helpful to students wishing to make Jin Shin Jyutsu a strong focus in their lives. Some or just part of this may be pertinent to your personal growth and direction. You are not required to travel down any of these paths, but this outline may offer some guidance about prerequisites for classes and practitioner-level status. We hope that you can see from this how our organization offers a path of study in the Art of Jin Shin Jyutsu Physio-Philosophy.
Guidelines for Jin Shin Jyutsu ®Physio-Philosophy Students
Levels of Training
Jin Shin Jyutsu Self-Help Class: We highly recommend that all Jin Shin Jyutsu students attend at least one Self-Help class. During this class, we study fundamental principles of Physio-Philosophy and how to apply the Art to ourselves and those in our lives. We have found that students who have completed the 5-Day Basic Seminar (see below) 3 times should understand the basics enough to help facilitate self-help classes using Mary Burmeister's three self-help books.
5-day Basic Seminar: The 5-day Basic Seminar is for those who want to study and practice Jin Shin Jyutsu and to apply the Art on themselves and others, being the testimony of this simple, profound Art of Living, made known to us by Mary Burmeister and Jiro Murai. Authorized instructors for the 5-day Basic Seminar are: Muriel Carlton, Philomena Dooley, Wayne Hackett, Lynne Pflueger, Waltraud Riegger-Krause, Jed Schwartz, Ian Harris, Birgitta Meinhardt, Iole Lebensztajn, Carlos Gutterres, Petra Elmendorff, Jill Holden, Cynthia Broshi, Nathalie Max, Susan Schwartz, and Anita Willoughby.
- Certificate of completion: After attendance of one 5-day Basic Seminar, a certificate of is issued for 35 hours.
- Three-time 5-Day Basic Seminar Certificate: Upon completion of three 5-day Basic Seminars, a second certificate is issued, certifying that 105 hours of class time have been attended.
- Jin Shin Jyutsu Student Practitioner: Upon completion of a student’s third 5-day Basic Seminar, a student has usually gained a basic awareness and understanding that Jin Shin Jyutsu has the potential to encompass a lifetime of study and that the journey has no beginning and no end.
As a Student Practitioner, you have limited rights to the use of our name:
- Jin Shin Jyutsu trademarks: The name “Jin Shin Jyutsu” and the Kanji (the Japanese character) – both found in our calendar brochure, our practitioner brochure and on our website – are trademarks of Jin Shin Jyutsu, Inc. All usages of either “Jin Shin Jyutsu” or the Kanji (the Japanese character) must bear the ® symbol. Upon completion of the student’s third 5-day Basic Seminar and as a practitioner and/or self-help instructor of Jin Shin Jyutsu Physio-Philosophy, the student has limited rights to use the Jin Shin Jyutsu name and Kanji logo. These rights may be withdrawn at any time by Jin Shin Jyutsu, Inc. Student practitioners are welcome to use these on stationery, business cards, promotional flyers, etc. as long as they include the ® symbol (as indicated above, and in the format shown on our letterhead at the top of this document). We in Scottsdale will be happy to answer questions or review any promotional materials for accuracy. When referring to Jin Shin Jyutsu in a title or in its first usage, please write:
Jin Shin Jyutsu ® Physio-Philosophy
Thereafter, it is not necessary to use the ® every time. The Kanji logo must have the appropriate symbol next to it, every time, regardless. We may withdraw this consent to use our trademarks if you take any action that we believe may negatively impact upon our reputation and Philosophy.
- Publications: We happily permit publication of articles in your community, provided that we are given the opportunity to review them in advance for accuracy. It is necessary to obtain our permission before you reproduce our materials or photographs, as they are the intellectual property of Jin Shin Jyutsu, Inc.
- Presenting a Self-Help Class: After attendance of three 5-day Basic Seminars, the student should understand the basics enough to help facilitate Self-Help classes using Mary Burmeister's three Self-Help books. We do think that it is essential to attend at least one Self-Help class, and it is very helpful to attend at least one Living the Art Seminar. (See below "Living the Art Seminar.")
Please use our name and trademarks properly when producing brochures or flyers about your class. We do ask that you make it clear in your flyer that it is a Jin Shin Jyutsu Self-Help class you are teaching.
Jin Shin Jyutsu, Inc. gives permission for Jin Shin Jyutsu student practitioners to teach Self-Help materials in their classes. We ask that the following guidelines be observed:
All Self-Help classes are to be presented using only the 3 Self-Help Books written by Mary Burmeister. No other material or summary can fully demonstrate the Art (of Getting to Know (Help) Myself) or better inspire the self-help instructor to convey Mary’s message. However, you may use the handouts given to you in the Living the Art Seminar as teaching tools to support the use of the 3 Self-Help Books, but not as a substitution for the Books.
We ask that you teach from your own level of experience and understanding. In other words, that you speak from your own experience and practice.
We ask that you do NOT combine the Self-Help class with other modalities or disciplines. If you call it a Jin Shin Jyutsu Self-Help class, you may teach ONLY Jin Shin Jyutsu Self-Help.
We have found it very helpful when presenting a Self-Help class to communicate with students that while these instructions are intended to assist them in helping themselves (and perhaps to assist friends and family in helping themselves), it is not intended to prepare them to offer Jin Shin Jyutsu sessions or teach others in a professional capacity (such as practitioner or self-help instructor or 5-day and Living the Art training instructor). Making available the latest seminar calendar brochure can help students differentiate between the Self-Help class and the 5-day Basic Seminar.
Jin Shin Jyutsu, Inc. may withdraw its consent to allow you to use its trademarks, logos and symbols at any time. Any costs or liabilities which you have incurred will solely be your responsibility. Jin Shin Jyutsu, Inc. does not test to determine one's understanding and therefore cannot be held reponsible for any type of loss or injury to you or to others.
Special Topic Classes: These are classes where we have the opportunity to look at a specific Jin Shin Jyutsu subject in a more detailed and profound way. It offers a chance to study and amplify relationships among the many aspects of Jin Shin Jyutsu, with more interaction between the students and the instructor. The classes have a very flexible format which can vary in size, number of days and subject matter, e.g., Pulses, Body Reading, The Depths, The Methods of Correction, Astrology, Organ Flows, etc. The Special Topic Classes have a requirement of attendance of one 5-day Basic Seminar (unless otherwise stated – some require three).
Living the Art Seminar: This seminar involves exploring Jin Shin Jyutsu Self-Help in depth with Mary Burmeister’s 3 Self-Help Books, revealing all that Mary has included in these extraordinary books and becoming more familiar with their contents. This class can deepen one’s understanding and daily practice of the self-help materials. A third objective is to improve our ability to share clearly, simply and safely the Physio-Philosophy and the Self-Help practice with others (family, friends, clients, groups), privately, in a lecture or Self-Help class. The prerequisite for the Living the Art Seminar is attendance of the 5-day Basic Seminar at least one time and basic knowledge of Mary’s 3 Self-Help Books. Upon completion of a student’s third 5-day Basic Seminar and the Living the Art Seminar, the student will receive the Living the Art certificate. The authorized Living the Art Instructors are: Sara Harper, Janet Oliver, Iole Lebensztajn, Mona Harris and Margareth Umeoka Serra.
Now Know Myself Seminar: The purpose of this seminar is to further examine the wealth of information in Text 1 and 2. The primary objective is to enrich each individual’s understanding of the why’s and how to’s of this beautiful Art, with emphasis on the unique concerns of student practitioners. It is an opportunity to develop Jin Shin Jyutsu concepts and practice in a very profound way. A panel of 2 or 3 instructors, whose number will be determined by the number of students enrolled, will present the training. To be eligible for attendance, a student is required to have completed the 5-day Basic Seminar three times. At the end of this seminar the student will receive the Now Know Myself certificate. The Now Know Myself seminar complements the fundamental training for anyone aspiring to become a capable Jin Shin Jyutsu® Student Practitioner.
The Journey Continues Seminar: This is a 5-day class taught by the 3 senior instructors: Muriel Carlton, Philomena Dooley and Wayne Hackett – who bring to bear their vast experience and understanding of Jin Shin Jyutsu. The prerequisite for attending students and student practitioners is five 5-day seminars. (The Now Know Myself Seminar or the Living the Art Seminar may be included for this total.) Mary Burmeister’s A & Q textbook will be the guide for this exploration of old and new materials. This class explores the Kojiki and the physiology of Jin Shin Jyutsu in Mary’s A & Q text and provides an opportunity to share experiences and wisdom with our senior instructors. A certificate of completion will be issued for those who attend all 5 days.
Student/Practitioner Mentoring Program: This program provides in-depth, practical study in a small group setting with an instructor. For one week, up to 6 student/practitioners will gather with one faculty member, and participate each day in seven hours of hands-on, discussion and other study activities. Each participant receives two sessions daily. The prerequisite for this program is a minimum of five 5-day seminars (or four 5-day seminars plus one of the following: a Journey Continues, Now Know Myself, Living the Art or two Special Topic Classes) over a three-year period. This program is held at the Jin Shin Jyutsu, Inc. office in Scottsdale, Arizona.
